Co Founder with Simon Cruz (1961-2004)
Open Moments was created by my late husband, Simon Cruz and myself at 270 St. Nicholas (124th Street). Simon Cruz was always an arduous supporter of art in all forms. One of the readings purposes was meant to expose, maintain and encourage the arts in the community. They were also meant to bring to light spiritual enlightenment as part of the artist’s tasks. He specially encouraged and helped young poets by sharing his own work and encouraging them in their endeavors. Simon was involved with the arts since his early youth and continued to write until the last few days of his life. His approach to his work was to live it. He collaborated with artists in the community (percussionists, painters, sculptors, actors, writers, dancers) to bring art to every day living.
OUR
MISSION
Open Moments at Columbia’s Intercultural Resource Center 2008- 2014- In the late 1980’s, Open Moments shifted it’s way from the City College campus to the Columbia University’s campus. It was at the Intercultural Resource Center where many students, professors and community members came out to release their thoughts into the Universe.
It was the peaceful OM ( a mantra and mystical Sanskrit of Hindu origin) that set the tone for everyone despite their beliefs or non-beliefs. NOW, Open Moments NYC is returning to one of the first stepping grounds, to encourage the relations between the community and the campus.
